The Mohamed Chaoui Venture Fellowship

A rolling fellowship for those of you seeking the challenge of a career in venture capital

A former colleague of a QIMING USA partner and a true friend to the firm, Mohamed Chaoui, has recently passed away following a battle with lung cancer. He has inspired us to create a rolling fellowship seeking to attract MBA, MD, Ph.D., PharmD or other advanced degree students with a unique QIMING USA experience.

Mohamed’s multi-company and multinational career included banking, M&A, corporate finance, business development, general management overseeing biopharma affiliates and the Asia-Pacific operations, and for UCB, was instrumental in catalyzing the growth of their China operations. Mohamed was quick to understand early in his career that biotech and biomedical firms, many of which were venture-backed, could provide the means to discover, develop and commercialize transformational products in ways larger companies might fail. And very recently, he was instrumental as part of a small team in moving forward the initial venture funding efforts at UCB.

Mohamed was full of life, with a daring spirit, boundless energy and courage, abundant creativity, a clear sense of purpose aimed at patients, and a passion for pursuing innovation. At the same time, he was analytically superb, and constantly measured success in terms of shareholder and stakeholder value. For any of us that had the chance to work with him, his impact will never fade.

For these reasons, we’re in search of students seeking to use a semester or school break with a fellowship in Qiming’s USA partnership. We commit to an experience that will provide a glimpse at what we do and how we work, help us answer questions or issues the partnership is facing, gain insights into young company creation coupled with product innovation, meet and work side by side with some very talented people and have what we hope is a fun and very memorable experience. In short, we’re hoping to provide you with something resembling working with Mohamed, and working on projects that we know he would cherish while adding value to Qiming and potentially, our growing network of portfolio companies

The application is simple. Send us a one or two paragraph note telling us why you are interested in a venture experience, and what special abilities you’ll bring that can help us learn throughout a 3-4 month period with Qiming, in one of our 3 locations (Cambridge, Palo Alto or Seattle). Attach your CV, and tell us what time period is optimal within your academic timetable.

Our aim is to engage 3 to 4 courageous people every 12 months, and we’re starting now.
